The origin of the colours is a subject of debate. The following story may well be apocryphal.

After the battle of Ptolemais in 1191 Duke Leopold V, having lost his standard, removed his blood soaked tunic and raised this instead. The area that was protected by the belt was the only part of the tunic that was still white.

The flag was restored in 1945 with independence.
