The sign of a white cross on a red background is a symbol that has been seen as early as the Holy Roman Empire in the 4th century. Swiss independence happened in 1291, but the modern flag dates from 1889.

The Swiss National Flag traditionally stands for freedom, honour and fidelity, but has become synonymous with neutrality, peace and refuge.
