Greece

The blue and white colours of the National flag of Greece were adopted in January 1822 by the National Assembly - this version of the flag was approved in 1832.

It is said that the stripes represent the nine syllables of the Greek patriots motto: Ελευθερια η Θανατος which means 'Freedom or Death', and is now the national motto of Greece.
