The Peruvian flag was first conceived, according to popular belief, by General San Martin during the Liberation Campaign when, after waking from a siesta in the desert of Paracas, he watched a flock of 'parihuanas' - a variety of red and white flamingo. The original concept involved a diagonally divided four field red and white flag. The version used today was refined in May 1822.
