Republic of Poland

The colours in the National flag of Poland first appeared in mediaeval times - a red flag with a white eagle was used by King Wladyslaw Jagiello in 1410 at the battle of Grunwald.

The more familiar red and white design came about in the 17th century but consisted of three bands of red at the top and bottom and white in the middle - the version that exists today was officially recognized in 1919, after Poland regained her independence.
