This flag was first used unofficially in 1693 as a naval ensign and was later adopted by Peter I in 1705, it wasn't until 1883 that it was recognised as a civil flag. Suppressed by the Bolsheviks, the Russian Tricolour began to gain popularity once again by 1990.

In 1991, three days after an attempted coup against President Mikhail Gorbachev, it was officially adopted as the State Flag of Russia.
