The red in the flag represents China, the white sun is the spirit of progress and the twelve points symbolise the twelve hours of the day, a traditional Chinese hour is equal to two conventional hours. The sun on a blue background is also the party flag of the \nationalist Party, the Kuomintang.

Although officially adopted in 1914 as the naval ensign, it wasn't until 1928 that it became the National Flag.
